Your skin is your identity. It is the first thing people see when they look at you. At least that’s what I see. No matter how beautiful you are, if your skin looks dull or flaky, you’re not going to have that confidence that comes with having great skin.

You guys know that I’m a lover and preacher of anything skin. I’ve got a whole category on this blog for skincare. Now, I know that none of us has the “perfect” skin (I stand to be corrected)  but the goal is not even to have the “perfect” skin but more importantly a healthy skin. This is why in this blog post, I’ll be sharing with you 7 tips to keep your skin looking healthy and nourished this summer.

The best part of this is you don’t have to start buying lots of skincare products to achieve this. In my opinion, investing in good skincare should come after doing the basics, after doing all these.

How To Take Care Of Your Skin This Summer

1. Drink lots of water

You may have guessed this one. Yes! I cannot overemphasize how beneficial water is to the skin. I was in a room in ‘clubhouse’ about a week ago and we were playing the Questions game. I remember someone asking one lady a question about why her skin looks so good, from her display picture of course and she goes, “Oh, thank you! I drink lots of water” We all laughed because it seemed very vague. The truth is, that could be the biggest part of her skincare routine.

If you haven’t been drinking water, start! Not only because of your skin but also for your general wellbeing.  Water does a lot more in the body than you can ever imagine. And if you have been drinking water, increase your daily water intake. It’s never too much.

Personally, I was guilty of this until recently that I began to put in more efforts after a visit to my doctor.  I used to be so buried in work that I would forget to drink water, sometimes I just don’t like the taste of water. This affected my skin and my health generally and I have seen a drastic change since I started drinking more water. I started to set reminders throughout the day to remind myself to drink water and I got water bottles from amazon with marks and reminders on them to encourage me.  All these are things you can implement as well. Drinking plenty of water never killed anyone. So drink water and mind your business. just kidding.

2. Eat a healthy breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and it is the most overlooked meal. Asides from eating breakfast, make sure what you consume is healthy. A healthy breakfast plays a major role in the nourishment of your skin. Find out healthy foods that you can eat for clear skin; not just your face but your body as well especially if you struggle with ‘bacne’. For example, oatmeal can help improve your skin (face and body) appearance. Also, you can include fruits like blueberries in your breakfast diet.

3. Exercise

I am very particular about fitness. Exercise isn’t and shouldn’t be for when you just want to shed that body fat cos a lot of people would only remember to start exercising when they feel they are adding weight. Exercises include but are not limited to walking, jogging, and even dancing. It helps to strengthen your heart. When you exercise, your blood flow increases, which delivers oxygen to your body system, thereby nourishing your skin. So the next time your friend tells you to start exercising, don’t look for excuses.

4. Eat your vegetables

I wasn’t sure whether to add this point to the second point or not. Anyways, vegetables contain a lot of vitamins that are necessary for healthy skin. Don’t deprive your body of vitamins. You can consume vegetables in a lot of ways. You can cook with them and eat them as peppers; you can make them as shakes and drink them. Whichever way you want, just eat your vegetables.

5. Get your beauty sleep

I like the term “beauty” because it will be beneficial to your skin. It is usually recommended to get an average of 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Many of us are not getting enough sleep may be due to school (if you’re a student), work, or even parenting (especially mums) but whenever we can, try to catch up on your sleep. Giving yourself adequate sleep tops the list of 5 habits that will make your skin look great.

6. Quit smoking

Smoking is not only bad for your lungs, but also the skin as well. If you smoke, that’s fine but let’s be honest, you cannot desire nourished skin, one has to go. Smoking causes skin ageing and causes a lot of skin disorders and that’s the exact opposite of what we are aiming for.

7. Don’t forget to wear sunscreen

Sunscreens, especially those with an SPF of 30 or more, shield your skin from the harmful rays of the sun, thereby preventing skin cancer. Whether the weather is sunny or cloudy, make sure to always put on sunscreen.  Some people think you should only put on sunscreen when you’re going out, big mistake. Apply sunscreen whether you’re going out or not and if you’re going to be outside for a long time, reapply your sunscreen after some time.

One more thing, sunscreen isn’t just for light-complexioned people. If you’re black or yellow or green, you need sunscreen as long as you’re walking this earth

One of the challenges you might face especially if you have dark skin is the white cast some sunscreens can give. In a previous post, I wrote about some dark-skin friendly sunscreens that will not leave a white cast you can check out.

Having great skin is such a big flex. Ask someone with good skin. What habits do you practice to nourish your skin? I would love to know.
