Hey, people welcome back to my blog! A few weeks back I started a skincare journey using only products from The Ordinary brand, alongside taking you through the journey and giving you updates, I would be doing reviews on each products starting with The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2%.
About The Brand
A little background on this brand won’t hurt anybody. The Ordinary is one of the brands under DECIEM umbrella and they make skincare active ingredients available to consumers at very affordable jawbreaking prices! Over the past few years, they’ve become one of the fast selling skincare brands.
The Ordinary products can be really intimidating because the products are usually labelled with their scientific name of the major ingredient(s) in the bottle leaving you to figure out what ‘Resveratrol 3% + Ferulic Acid 3%’ for example means. In a way, it’s a good thing because you don’t see stuff like ‘miracle glow serum” “clear pimples in one night” (these kinds of names are just marketing strategies) instead you see the names of the actual ingredient you’re getting.
Product Description
The Ordinary’s Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% as described by the ordinary website is a product that contains Vitamin C and Alpha Arbutin which are two of the most powerful brightening agents in skin care. Vitamin C is great for brightening the skin, it helps to even skin tone and also reduces signs of ageing while Alpha Arbutin is a highly-purified biosynthetic active ingredient that reduces the look of dark spots and uneven skin tone.
Vitamin C and Alpha Arbutin are very difficult to keep stable and do not perform well when mixed with water hence, this product is completely anhydrous.
The Ordinary has a wide range of vitamin C-based products to brighten skin; this one, in particular, is great if you are looking to get one that is “moderate” and has a kind of oily texture.
My Review
Vitamin C is a staple in my skincare routine so when I was trying to decide on which products to get, this definitely had to be there. I bought this product for #6500 and I must say, it’s been worth every penny so far. My face feels brighter and my skin tone looks more even than before.
At first, I used this product every night after applying salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid (both water-based serums), however, I noticed my face felt hot (not dangerously hot though) and it tingled. I changed the routine and I used it every other night without the salicylic acid and hyaluronic acid. and it doesn’t tingle that way. I don’t know why, but that’s just what happened with me, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the same with everyone.

In summary;
– Pros
- Helps to even out skin tone
- Brightens your complexion
- Moisturizes the face (but you can still use a moisturizer afterwards.
– Cons
- Might feel hot on your face (doesn’t burn)
- Might feel tingly, itchy and uncomfortable
- It’s somewhat oily and doesn’t absorb on time
Verdict
In all honesty, judging by the results I’ve seen so far, I would repurchase this product and I’ll definitely recommend to others. However, pay attention to the effects and see if you need to do something else to prevent irritation.
You definitely need to wear a sunscreen if you use this product in the morning if you’ll be exposed to the sun ultraviolet rays.
